Billing Process
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ketamine Insurance Billing
We currently accept Aetna, Cigna, and United Healthcare (Optum) to partially bill for in-person Ketamine Therapy sessions.
Specifically, the clinical portion of the visit (such as evaluation, medical monitoring, and brief follow-up) may be submitted to eligible insurance plans. The non-clinical portion, including extended monitoring and integration support, remains cash-pay only.
Platform Limitations
Clients whose insurance is processed through Alma or Headway cannot use their insurance for Ketamine services, as these platforms may not support Ketamine-related billing. In such cases, a private-pay model is required, and a signed financial waiver will be provided.
Husky (CT Medicaid) Policy (Ketamine only)
Due to state Medicaid regulations, clients with Husky (CT Medicaid) are not eligible for Ketamine services through our practice—even on a private-pay basis. Medicaid prohibits billing clients out-of-pocket for services that are potentially covered or fall within the scope of Medicaid-funded care.

At Mental Serenity Psychiatric Services PLLC, the safety and well-being of our clients is our top priority. Controlled substances are prescribed sparingly and only when clinically appropriate, in accordance with strict federal and state regulations.
We follow all legal guidelines, including reviewing each patient’s record in the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) prior to prescribing any controlled medications.
Do We Prescribe Controlled Medications?
Yes, but only under strict clinical guidelines and when deemed medically necessary.
Benzodiazepine Policy
(Applies to medications such as Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium, etc.)
While short-term benzodiazepine use can be effective for acute anxiety or insomnia, research has shown that long-term use carries significant risks, including physical dependence, cognitive decline, and potential links to neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia. Due to these risks, national clinical guidelines recommend limiting benzodiazepine use to short durations, and when possible, transitioning patients to safer, long-term treatment options.
At Mental Serenity Psychiatric Services PLLC:
We understand that each individual has unique treatment preferences. However, because our practice does not support long-term benzodiazepine use as part of our treatment model, we may not be the most appropriate fit for individuals seeking ongoing benzodiazepine prescriptions.
Clinical Guidance Summary
This policy is based on current evidence and recommendations from the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the American Geriatrics Society (AGS), and research published in the BMJ and Addiction. These sources emphasize that benzodiazepines should be used short-term and with close monitoring, especially given their association with dependence and cognitive risks.
Other Controlled Substances:
Stimulants (e.g., Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse)
Sleep Medications (e.g., Ambien, Lunesta)
Ketamine Therapy
Prescribing Requirements:
For all controlled substances and regulated treatments, we require:
We appreciate your understanding and your partnership in maintaining safe and responsible medication management.
