We have a strict Controlled Medications Policy
The safety and care of our clients is our number one priority. Controlled medications are prescribed sparingly in this practice in an effort to keep you safe. They are also highly regulated by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Our prescribing of such medications is monitored, and providers are held accountable for prescribing practices. State laws require that additional measures be taken when prescribing controlled substances such as checking PDMP. We want our clients to know how seriously we take the prescribing of these types of medications.
Benzodiazepine policy
There is extensive literature detailing the detrimental effects of long-term benzodiazepine use (e.g., Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium). These medications are generally indicated only for the short-term management of anxiety while a therapeutic dose of a non-benzodiazepine is being established, along with active engagement in psychotherapy.
Long-term use of benzodiazepines has the potential to cause rebound anxiety, poor sleep or insomnia, increased tolerance, and an elevated risk of early-onset Alzheimer’s and dementia. If you are currently on a benzodiazepine, your provider will recommend a gradual taper, accompanied by other treatments, to prevent withdrawal seizures, lessen symptom discomfort, and better manage anxiety. All patients who are previously prescribed benzodiazepines are tapered off at this practice. If you do not prefer to explore alternative treatments, you may wish to consider finding another provider.
We prioritize comprehensive care and specialized expertise for optimal outcomes. When needed, we provide referrals to trusted professionals who specialize in specific areas of mental health or offer services that better meet your needs. Whether collaborating with a specialists or recommending specialized providers, therapists, or facilities, our goal is to ensure you receive effective and continuing care individualized and specific to your needs. Your well-being and positive outcomes are our top priorities throughout your treatment journey.
